Foundations Class (not just for beginners)
3 sessions, 2 hrs each
January 2025 class: Fri/Sat/Sun ◆ Jan 3-5 ◆ 6:30pm - 8:30 pm
Dec class: Mon/Wed/Fri ◆ Dec 2, 4, 6 ◆ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
We believe introductory classes are the most important classes that you'll ever take. Few studios anywhere will give you a better start at kiln formed glass than Helios.
After our Foundations class you will be able to confidently approach hundreds of glass projects. The foundational information covered in this class underlies every glass lass, project, and technique you will be inspired to create!
We cover:
how glass behaves at different temperatures (& firing schedules)
different kinds and styles of glass
practice using various tools, including cutting practice and using machines to coldwork (grinder, tile saw and sandblaster)
compatibility (the importance of coe - coefficient of expansion- and viscosity, and different coes)
the science behind why glass does what it does at different temperatures and how to bend it to your will
We will focus on arranging glass for flat fusing - the first step towards many more advanced techniques including bowl making - then shaping it. You will come away with "test" tiles, pendants or coasters, and a large final project such as a bowl, vase, or platter. Plus, you’ll have the confidence to tackle projects on your own!
