Teacher: Malina Cipleu
In this three day intensive class, we will focus on creating bar-relief in sheet glass. Stemming from the Italian phrase “basso-relievo”, it directly translates to low relief. We will be using fiber paper and the heat of the kiln as “carving tools” for the glass. It is a simple technique that has numerous variations with spectacular results and can be used with transparent and opaque glass. We will be discussing considerations in choosing designs that will be “kiln-carved” in the glass, creating a fiber paper template and firing the selected glass on top of it, effectively carving the glass.
About Malina Cipleu
Malina Cipleu is an Austin-based artist born and raised in Transylvania, the Northwest region of Romania. For the last 10 years, working primarily with fused glass, polymer clay, and sterling silver, she’s been creating a wide range of work from functional objects, to fine art, to jewelry. Her work responds to an intuitive search for harmony and balance, inspired by rhythm, beauty, and impermanence in the natural or man-made world.
Malina’s fused glass journey includes classes with Paul Tarlow, Kari Minnick, Bob Leatherbarrow, Richard Parrish, Morgan Madison, Linda Ethier, Alicia Lomne, Kristine Shafer, Evelyn Gottschall Baker, and over a decade of personal research and experimentation.
She started recently to share her passion for kiln-formed glass through teaching hoping to help others realize the unlimited potential of this medium and its beauty.
