June 8-12, 2024 ◆ Saturday - Wednesday ◆ 10:00AM - 5:00PM

5 days

10 students maximum

Catered lunches included! (Let us know about any dietary considerations when you register.)

Hidden rooms, secret places, glimpses of an inner worlds. In this class we’ll explore the mysteries of the inner landscape. Working with the unique transparency of glass, learn to create sculpture that integrates the exterior form of sculpture with the traditionally hidden inner space to create a narrative universe. Through a variety of exercises participants will develop a visual library of images and symbols that tell a story, their story, real or not, abstract, poetic or representational.

Using this story as a starting point, students will work in clay to create the model for a monolithic sculpture that, when cast in glass, will function as both the outer surface/imagery of the sculpture and the boundaries of the universe for the interior narrative.  The outer world that contains the inner world, the background of the stage scenery.

A selection of images will be translated into glass objects to be used as inclusions and layered within the thick clear glass casting to populate the inner story.

Participants will make one main project along with a variety of inclusions, and tests.

 Techniques covered:

  • Creating original artworks in clay for open mold casting.

  • Glass options for casting, billets, patties, sheet glass, frits and powders.

  • Creating inclusions - pre-cast glass objects and cased inclusions, pre-fused sheet glass, pate de verre, powder wafers, torch worked, paints, lusters, decals, and metals.

  • Flexible Hydrogel Molds.

  • Refractory mold materials options.

  • Mold making techniques: poured/block molds, shell molds, open face molds for thick casting.

  • Techniques for packing molds and adding inclusions.

  • Kiln theory and setup.

  • Firing schedules.

  • Finishing / cold working options
