Dec 7-10, 2024 - Saturday-Tuesday - 10:00AM - 5:00PM
4 days
Fabulous catered lunches included
The two-part ingredients of Modeling Glass, combined with glass powders and water, becomes a non-sticky material that can be shaped, sculpted, molded, coiled, and otherwise worked similar to clay. Colors are unlimited, as are possibilities. When fired, the binders and medium burn off, and your work of fused glass art emerges from the kiln.
In this new four-day workshop, students will learn how to mix and work with multiple colors of Modeling Glass to make unique dimensional compositions inspired by a winter forest. We will be hand-sculpting as well as using silicone molds to make a variety of highly detailed components. This is not freeze-and-fuse. Students will then assemble the fired components onto a precut sheet glass mask blank. After firing, these will be slumped over a mask draping form designed by Lois.
Students will make a second mask project, this one using only Modeling Glass without sheet glass. This will be an interpretation of an animal chosen by each student. Let your inner spirit animal run free! There will be plenty of room for originality and self expression. Lois will demonstrate how to mount the masks on backing glass in a frame, and the workshop will include an image show of Lois’ work and a table full of fired samples demonstrating the many ways Modeling Glass can be used to make unique works of glass art. These are always a source of lively Q&A. The possibilities of Modeling Glass are endless…see for yourself!
Artist Bio
I've been an artist most of my life, working in pastel, acrylic, scratchboard, watercolor, etc. and as a professional freelance designer. But when I tried glass for the first time about 10 years ago, it was life changing. I developed unique methods of working with glass powders, and I created Modeling Glass in order to make three-dimensional shapes without the need for making molds. I’m most well-known for my realistic larger- than-life glass feathers made entirely with powders and Modeling Glass. I’ve taught workshops in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. for several years. Now I'm teaching my process of making glass masks using Modeling Glass, which is a completely new workshop format.
