Welcome to coldworking gone wild!
Mokume Gane is a 17th century Japanese metalworking technique originally developed to produce beautiful swords. Metalsmiths have been using this technique ever since to create sumptuous layered jewelry, knives and flatware. Tiffany even presented their early work at the world’s fair. Translated as “wood-eye-metal”, this technique can also be used to create beautiful patterned glass.
In this class you will be using coldworking equipment heavily and in unusual ways. Safety is a major focus in this course and will be closely monitored by multiple assistants and quality equipment. You will create your own thick slab of glass to create your own piece of Mokume Gane. You’ll also be able to slump your finished piece or save it to use as an element in a larger project .
