Class Level: Beginner/Intermediate
Teacher: Malina Cipleu
In this class we’ll focus on a simple technique that leads to endless choices and unlimited opportunities in creating unique fused glass designs. As the title of the class mentions, we’ll make tapered stacks of glass and fuse them to create rings of color. We’ll discuss about design considerations, glass reactions, using transparent versus opaque glass, and placement of stacks in creating a pleasing composition. As a final project you will create a panel that could be slumped in a platter, tray or used as a standing piece, depending on your choice.
About Malina Cipleu
Malina Cipleu is an Austin-based artist born and raised in Transylvania, the Northwest region of Romania. For the last 10 years, working primarily with fused glass, polymer clay, and sterling silver, she’s been creating a wide range of work from functional objects, to fine art, to jewelry.
Her work responds to an intuitive search for harmony and balance, inspired by rhythm, beauty, and impermanence in the natural or manufactured world. With all their colors and emotions, these attributes stay with her subconsciously and eventually surface in her art in an abstract manner.
Her fused glass journey includes classes with Paul Tarlow, Kari Minnick, Bob Leatherbarrow, Richard Parish, Morgan Madison, Linda Ethier, Alicia Lomne, Kristine Shafer, and over a decade of personal research and experimentation.
Malina’s work has been juried into several fine art shows, including West and East Austin Studio Tours and the Art Center - Highland Park, IL. Several local Texas art galleries have sold her pieces. Both national and international private collectors have also commissioned her. This Fall, Malina was part of an invitational kiln-glass residency at Pilchuck School of Glass.
