(Past) Tech Series: Pattern Drawing with the GlassClown
single night workshop ◆ Wed ◆ May 22 ◆ 6:30pm – 9:00pm
Class Level: All - uses free photo editing software (GIMP), bring your laptop to step-by-step follow along with Deke!
Teacher: Deke Cameron (www.theglassclown.com)
Are you drawing your cut lines directly onto your glass only to have them washed away prematurely by the grinder or saw?
Are your paper pattern pieces getting soggy or falling off before your glass has reached its final form?
Are you ready for a more reliably precise method of transferring your design to your sheet glass?
If so, you may find this class helpful.
In this demonstration workshop, you'll see how I design and draw my own patterns using open-source (free) software on a PC, and then create waterproof, self-adhesive pattern stickers using a desktop cutting appliance (Silhouette Cameo or Cricut). You'll see the entire design process from start to finish, with each step explained in detail.
Design theory will be discussed as well as specific tools within the software, and their usage in designing beautiful and structurally sound patterns.
Transferring the digital pattern from the computer to the desktop vinyl cutter has some nuance, and my method will be discussed in detail, with live demonstration of the process.
Loading vinyl into the desktop appliance and demonstration of the cutting of self-adhesive pattern stickers will also be shown in detail, so the students can see the entire process from start-to-finish in real-time.
This class is open to all skill-levels, and beginners are especially encouraged to join. You should have some basic experience with working from a pattern (your own or someone else's) to get the most out of this class. Basic comfort using a desktop or laptop computer is essential for this class. Students are encouraged to bring their laptop computer (MacOS, Windows, Linux are fine) to follow along during the class. The demonstration will feature the software package called GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) and can be downloaded prior to or at the start of the session. The software is 100% free for personal or commercial use and is comparable to Photoshop in its capabilities to produce a 2-dimensional drawing of any scale. Utilizing this method, I'm able to go from the drawing board to the cutting table in a matter of minutes, and no longer have to fight with glue sticks or unreliable marker lines. After taking this course, students will become familiar with the essential tools needed for this process and should see instant improvement in their own pattern work, whether they follow this process exactly or not.
About the instructor: Deke Cameron is a self-taught South Korean-born stained glass artist from Central Texas. He has been drawing his own patterns using GIMP for over a decade and recently taught this class at the annual Glass Craft & Bead Expo in Las Vegas. You can see more of Deke’s work on his Instagram page @the_glassclown and at his website http://www.theglassclown.com. Also, he fuses glass from time to time.
