Barely Below the Surface

$800.00

by Andrea Loomis

19" x 9" x 11"

What a trip these pandemic years were! Locked in place by restrictions or personal caution the journey turned inwards. What’s still there when so many distractions and escapes cease to exist? The starting point of this journey of self-reflection is what lies barely below the surface; from there many paths open up!

Slumped, pressed glass sculpture, 2022

Artist Statement:

I save myself by

Finding meaning in beauty

Sharing my rescue.

"'Sharing my rescue?'

From what? You're fine!" they say

"Like you?" I ask.

"Of course!" they reply.

"Then please just enjoy...(I smile)

...the magical view."

My passion for glass fusing ignited in 2012. The technical and challenging aspects of kiln glass as an artistic medium, and the expressiveness of glass using light and color, transparency and shadows never cease to amaze me!

I don’t just think outside the box; my home has always been outside the box! I moved to the US in 2000 leaving family, friends, and a career behind. The culture and idea worlds of my native Central Europe, and more local, southern Germany are the backbone of my creative work. Yet for me, being a citizen of two continents means bonding my imprint through crafts, traditions, and art history, with the ideas and perspectives I gained through my move into a “new” world. My mostly sculptural work is abstract and highly experimental. At the core lies my unquenchable thirst for exploration. Visual experiences, memories, and my imagination provide the language to express what occupies my mind: what separates us, and could bring us together - politics, culture systems, spiritual ideas, landscapes and their impacts, and memories of people and communities we love. I continue to travel, explore places and cultures, learn new techniques, and experiment.
