Reef

30” x 22” x 8.5”
I find myself fascinated by places and things I have yet to see in person, by journeys I have not yet taken. One place I find myself drawn to is the underwater world, particularly the ocean.I dream of one day learning to scuba dive and visiting coral reefs around the world.I find the abundance and variety of life there mesmerizing and alluring. As I have not experienced an actual reef, I transfer these longings and imaginations into my art.My “Reef” piece represents three different versions of living coral that I imagine I might see on my journey exploring the sea floor. The cutting and placement of all the glass pieces for fusing (a slow and time consuming process, itself a journey of mindfulness) and the ways in which I built each drape set-up, was meticulous and deliberate, allowing me to produce so many striking organic lines that cast such incredible shadows, which are some of my favorite aspects of these pieces. My choice of colors was meant to be harmonious, with each distinct piece containing at least a hint of color from each other piece. As well, I use those blues, browns, and greys to reinforce the beauty of the natural forms represented by this piece.“Reef” represents a hope for the unfolding future and of journeys still to come. Each piece offers a hint at what wonder and beauty lie just around the bend.

While I’ve experimented with art in the past, my journey into glass only began a few years ago, as I finally decided that becoming a fused glass artist was what I wanted for my life moving forward.I find myself drawn to nature in most things that I do but especially in my glass art.I find peace and comfort in the aesthetics of the organic lines, shapes, movements, and textures of the natural world, as well as in the colors and variations of color under differing light conditions. It’s as if the universe hides layers of itself that are only perceptible in certain lights and only to those who really see.I set out to create artistic representations of these wondrous aspects of nature with my glass pieces, that honor the beauty in the natural world around me.
